Sample Schedule

In this course, students will learn about game development by writing code in Lua to create custom game features such as checkpoints, high score boards, and game boosts for their own multi-stage obby platformer game.

Here’s a sample of what a week in the course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of the key material and overall student experience.

Students will modify game terrain to create custom mountains, valleys, and plateaus; then, they’ll learn about game design and edit properties to create the intro stages of their obby game.

Next, they’ll learn about coding fundamentals as they design a system to save game progress using checkpoints. Then they’ll write their own code to create game boundaries that keep players within the live game area.

Using the Toolbox to create an immersive game environment, students will learn how to earn Robux through premium payouts and the DevEx program. From there, they will create and code an in-game donation button to start monetizing!

In their games, students will construct a high score board that displays the player’s running or final obby completion time and allows for friendly competition.

To complete the week, students will create game boosts that players can collect to earn temporary bonuses - like increased speed or jump height. Next, they’ll place the boosts strategically so players have to use thoughtful game strategy.

Portfolio-Boosting Transcript

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive an official iD Tech transcript outlining the skills they learned over the course of the week.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Roblox, monetization refers to earning money through their games by including special features, upgrades as in-game purchases, and more. For example, Roblox players can use Robux - the internal Roblox currency - to purchase something like a balloon to help them avoid a natural disaster, or a stronger sword as a weapon. Through these microtransactions, many kids have learned to turn their gaming passion into a lucrative enterprise.

Roblox introduces Lua coding through the engaging lens of creating obbys and awesome games with Roblox Studio, plus finding ways to monetize. By learning with Roblox, kids will activate their game design and entrepreneurial skills!
